Climate change

In this article the climate evolution since the second half of the last century in the east of Austria is shortly described. Therefore, the climate before 1990 is compared with the values obtained after 1990.

In the following diagram the mean values of air temperature in the east of Austria are depicted since 1955:

For a better overview from these data a mean of 5 year periods was derived. The deviations are +/-7,5%, see following diagram:

Here, the increase of the temperatures can be seen clearly. Before 1985, the mean values were in most cases lower than 10 °C. Mainly since 2000 most obtained values are higher then 10 °C.

In agriculture as well as in the private sector (gardening), people still work in most cases with the 'old' climate conditions from the years before 1990. In the next diagram this (old) time periode is marked as ‚State of the Art‘ and compared with the 'actual conditions' form nowadays.

The next diagrams, in which the values from the periode 1955-1985 are compared with the values from 1988-2018, this fact can be seen very clear:

Independent how this problem is represented, for us and our agriculture it's on time to act accordingly!

In the following graphcis the mean values of temperature and rainfall in the time periode from 1991-2020 in Eisenstadt are shown. The both mean values of this 30 years are marked with a red line. For comparison, the mean values form the periode 1981-2010 are marked with a green line.

Of course the data from 1991 to 2010 are identical in this comparison! 2/3 of the data are exactly the same. In case of the first periode the first third of the data (1981-1990) was taken into account, in case of the second periode the last third was taken into account (2011-2020) together with the data from 1991 to 2010. But this is enough to see clearly the increase of temperature and decrease of annual rainfall: mean temperature in the first periode was 10,4 °C, in the second 11,6 °C. Rainfall was in the periode 1981-2010 at about 750 mm/year, from 1991-2020 only about 675 mm/year.

Aloud predicitons we have to prepare for hotter, dryer summers with unusual extreme wheather events. If raining then the dry soil isn't able to absorb all the water in this very short time in more and more often cases. Consequently, on the one hand flooding events will occure more and more often. On the other hand, the soil in the fields still stays more and more dry.

Meanwhile the climate of Eisenstadt can be compared with the typical climate of Meran (Trentino, IT)! Rainfall of around 500-800 mm/year is similar to Meran (600-650 mm/Jahr), the mean temperature of Eisenstadt is about 11,5-12 °C (Meran also about 12 °C). In the 1980's and 90's there was a clear difference in the measured values.
